I saw an expensive designer "labyrinth" carpet like this in a catalog years ago, and wondered at the time if I could recreate the effect on the cheap by taking electric hair clippers to a piece of ordinary deep pile carpet. Long story short: It works!

How-To: Homemade Blueberry Pie Ice Cream

blueberry_pie_icecream.jpg

With summer well underway, we've been consuming our fair share of ice cream. I've always wished we had an ice cream maker to whip up batches of homemade ice cream on our own, and this recipe from She Wears Many Hats makes me want one even more. See how she combines blueberry pie ingredients for a scrumptious frosty treat. [via Bakerella]

a road trip with Posterous

When Scott and I moved from Ohio to California we had the types of mobile phones that only make calls, remember those? While exploring our new state we would go to places that were amazing (the Golden Gate Bridge, Yosemite, the beach right there on the real actual ocean) and call our parents and say "guess where we are!" It seems like we blinked and here we are with phones that take photos and send email and so many ways of sharing our experiences with photos and video online.

[1]

I was thinking about this the other day when Posterous [2] got in touch to talk about about their Posterous Groups and privacy. They want to let us know that Posterous is an easy way you can share thoughts, photos, video and documents just with the people on your list. So Scott [3] and I decided to take a mini summer vacation to try it out.

We went for a one-day road trip. These are all photos we sent to our family Posterous Group (meaning each time we sent a photo it landed in the email of our family members almost right away) and which would be completely private except for the fact that, well, I'm showing them to you here. Below is what we learned on our trip:

East of Seattle are a few places that make for a nice day trip without it being too long of a car ride, which is especially nice if you have kids in the car or, like me, get car sick pretty easily. First on our list was Snoqualmie Falls [4]. We drove up to the just-redone park where you can get some great views of the falls. On the day we visited the water was rushing harder than we'd ever seen it before and the wind was picking up the mist and covering those of us on the viewing platforms.

Since the photos only go to your Posterous Group you don't have to worry about sending a slightly unflattering or just plain boring photo to a list or site where more people than you'd really like can see them. You mom loves you and wants to see your pretty face no matter what. (I was so cold and my hair was getting very wet in photo above. Hi Mom!)

Posterous is free (yay) and super simple to set up. It does two things, it works as a simple blogging platform to allow you to share whatever you'd like with the world, and it also allows you to set up Groups to share words, images, video and attachments with only those you'd like to while keeping it nice and private from everybody else. People in your Posterous Group can also send items to share so exchanging information or keeping in touch is as easy as possible. Examples! You need to see some examples, go here on Posterous [5] to peek at some sites. And look! The Maker Faire Daily [6] is a Posterous site, awesome.

The Salish Lodge [7] is perched on the land just next to the falls (you can see it in the first photo of the falls above). There has been an inn in that spot since 1919 (the current one was was rebuilt in the 80s). Salish Lodge has an amazing brunch menu and in particular the Country Breakfast is famous for being enormous and must be attempted at least once. Brunch and then a nice stroll along the park trails to view the falls is a good start (you might need to walk back and forth through the park more than once to recover from the meal). I hear the rooms in the lodge are nice. We've never stayed at the lodge but we have lingered in the lobby while pretending that we're staying there.

When you send a photo out using Posterous the email arrives in the inboxes of your group with the sendee being your own email address, so there is no confusion over who the message is coming from. Score one for making it easy on your family.

The town of Snoqualmie [8] is a very short drive just down the road and they display old trains all along the main street, which grew up along the train tracks there. A lot of them are available for you to climb on and in, I felt like we were getting away with something. We also saw a large wedding party out to get a group photograph (the bridesmaids were wearing navy dresses with bright yellow accents, it worked surprisingly well). We also saw a couple on bicycles who were both wearing large paper crowns and totally owning the look, I liked them immediately.

The photos you send to your Posterous Group are also collected in your Posterous account, all neat and tidy and together. You don't have to worry about sorting them or uploading them somewhere else later. I really fell for this feature, the album of the trip is ready for you right away with no extra work. Nice.

Snoqualmie also has train rides out of the Train Museum [9]! We watched as one passed by, we were a bit jealous of those on board. Scott's nephew and his dad would love this, so we have a reason to return.

Posterous sizes, orients, hosts and generally makes good the photos and video you send. Get your family members set up to all post to the group and this feature might also eliminate you getting emailed giant photos of your niece at her dance recital that take forever to download and are sideways when you open them. (Can you tell this happens to us? This happens to us.)

The next town over from Snoqualmie is North Bend [10]. It's a sweet little town surrounded by looming mountains. One is Mount Si [11], a popular hiking spot which we have yet to take on, I hear the view at the top is amazing. I'll take their word on it. North Bend is also home to Twede's Cafe [12], made famous by Twin Peaks. We didn't stop and have pie, we should have had pie!

On the way back to Seattle we stopped at the historic XXX Root Beer Drive-In [13] in Issaquah. The walls are covered with old rock-and-roll posters and souvenirs and classic car stuff, it's really something to behold.

While we were out we sent photos with descriptions and notes using the email on my phone and the Posterous app (requires iOS 4) on Scott's iPhone (there is an Android app as well). My iPhone is older and takes the grainy photos you're seeing, Scott's iPhone is shiny-new and takes nice photos. I also played with his Hipstamatic [14] photo app that day, I like it.

Since we were on vacation we took the opportunity to order the XXX signature burger, an enormous creation that is about 10 inches across. That mug of root beer? Also enormous. We split both but didn't finish either. Ok, maybe one of us finished their half of the burger.

It seems like every time we stop at XXX Root Beer there is a classic car show in the parking lot next door. Shiny and red!

Because the things you send to your Posterous Group only get sent out to your list (in our case family) you can show off your vacation photos immediately without letting the whole internet know something like: "Look! We're at the Grand Canyon! And we're obviously nowhere near home right now so go ahead and steal that giant television I posted a photo of last week!"

You can tell the people who make Posterous like you. They make it easy to share information with everybody, or just the ones that you'd like, using whichever way is most convenient for you. You can post using an app, by sending the information you'd like in an email (either from your computer or from your phone) or by using the Posterous website itself. Basically anywhere you might be. Handy. And Posterous knows just what to do with the words/photos/video you send when it gets there. I'm really impressed with the care that they put into everything.

Just so you know: This is a sponsored post from a company that I like.

Cat Fur Jewelry

cat_fur_jewelry.jpg

We recently brought home our first cat, and while we've loved loving on her, the fur everywhere is getting a bit tiresome. Inspired by this jewelry from Flora Davis, who creates jewlery pieces from her own cat's fur, I think I'll start looking at the piles behind the couch as craft supplies instead of something else to clean. May Birthday Giveaway: jewelry from Dave Sheely Designs

[1]

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I've got two pairs of earrings and one hilarious ring from Dave Sheely Designs [2] for one lucky person. Dave knows his resins and uses only the highest quality in his jewelry, they don't discolor over time, don't shatter, and are scratch resistant (which means a bright orange ring I have of his has stayed as lovely and shiny as the day Scott gifted it to me!). Each of his pieces is hand colored and polished, and since Dave is a friend I can tell you a whole lot of care goes into each one. His designs combine bright colors and a sense of humor and often incorporate beach glass or tiny objects meticulously placed, take a look at his Floating Red Gemstone [3], or the Crystal Esther Ring [4] to see some of my favorites. Today I've got two pairs of textured earrings, one set of orange discs and one set of teal shapes (these earrings are super lightweight, I've held some), and one "Ring Finger Ring" (size 9) which is made to flip and point on it's own. Oh gosh that is so weird, I want one.

If you'd like to win this fabulous set of jewelry from Dave Sheely Designs please leave a comment with this post and, if you'd like something to talk about, answer this question: Have you ever lost a favorite piece of jewelry? I have, in high school I had a favorite chunky silver ring that held a particular sort of teenage symbolism for me. I lost it in the dressing room of a TJ Maxx while trying on prom dresses. I was heartbroken. Ever since then I tend to obsessively check to make sure my jewelry is in place (and it's also one big reason I didn't want a real diamond in my engagement/wedding ring). Ok, you've got until Wednesday, May 25th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [5] applies, good luck! Closed, thanks so much for entering!

May Birthday Giveaway: Made By Moxie

Today I have a wee finger puppet made by the amazing Moxie [1] for one lucky person. Moxie is a fiber artist and needle felting wool by hand is her usual (but not only) medium. She creates breathtakingly amazing sculptures, both large and small, some are lifelike and some hilarious while at the same time a bit heartbreaking. You can see some of her most recent work on her site: icons & totems & pieces of the past [2], a recent show in NYC, and her sets Hungry [3] and Hungry 2 [4] are hilarious. If you're interested in learning to needle felt keep an eye on her schedule, she teaches classes.

If you'd like win this sweet bit of the genius please leave a comment with this post. If you don't mind I'd love to know: Have you ever tried needle felting? I have, but I'm afraid it'll take a lot more practice for it to become something that could be called presentable. Pen Nib Dress

animated pen dress.jpg

I don't know much about dresses...or pen nibs, but apparently together they create an impressive visual effect, as this Pen Nib Dress by John Nussey and Steven Tai illustrates.

795 pen nibs, mounted on tiny motors, are sewn into the dress. These rows of pen nibs are animated to created a hypnotic shimmer of movement which changes over time, varying the tempo, pattern and the overall mood of the piece.

We found ourselves out near Frost Donuts [1] (a short drive away from Seattle) so we stopped in. I'd read a lot about it but I wasn't prepared for how amazing the donuts look [2] (take a peek at that Aztec Chocolate, go on), how adorably designed the shop was, and how really, really good the donuts were. experiments in Rainbow Cakes

This past St. Patrick's Day I made a Leprechaun Trap Cake [1], shown above, which revealed a nice rainbow shape inside each slice. I created the rainbow by pouring colored cake batter into an angel food cake pan one color on top of the other and it came out surprisingly well. (More details on the amounts of colored batter I used are in the original post [2].) At the time I wondered if doubling the recipe or using different cake pans would result in the same effect and I've made a half dozen cakes over the past month to find out. The results are below and it turns out the answer is "nope".

For each of the following cakes I used the same boxed white cake mix, the same gel food colorings and the same technique to layer the batter.

Two boxes of cake mix in an angel food cake pan. For my original cake I used one box of cake mix in this same angel food cake pan. Doubling the amount makes a big difference and the cake almost spilled over the top of the pan while baking. If I'd leveled this one I would have had a swoopy and uneven rainbow, but it would have been there.

Half a box of cake mix in a 6 inch round cake pan. This was my most successful test variation. The cake shown has been leveled and turned out onto a plate, each slice had half a rainbow.

One box of cake mix in a 6 inch round cake pan. I was hoping that the flat bottom of the cake pan with lots of batter would result in a tall rainbow, but instead I got something that looks more like a volcano. I didn't level this cake.

Half a box of cake mix in a 4.5 x 8.5 inch loaf pan. I hoped the flat bottom of a loaf pan would give me similar results to the bundt pan but the batter didn't quite behave the same way. I leveled this cake before cutting into it and didn't realize that the leveled top held all the blue and purple colors, so I put it back on for the sake of the picture.

One box of cake mix in a 4.5 x 8.5 inch loaf pan. Another loaf pan experiment this time with twice the batter, and another volcano like result.

Two boxes of cake mix in a round mixing bowl. Here again I was hoping a tall cake would result in a nice tall rainbow. I didn't get that but I did get some very impressive swirling down the center of the cake and back up around the sides of the bowl. The center of this cake never quite baked. A failure all around but it's pretty cool to see how the batter moves while it's baking.

My conclusion is that using less batter in a flat bottomed pan will more likely result in the rainbow arch I was hoping for. And that I got very, very lucky for the first version of this cake [3] that I made to come out so nicely. Call it the luck of the Irish?

Stools Made From Plastic Bags

plastic_bag_stools.jpg

CasaSugar points us to these rad stools whose seats are made from fused plastic bags. Jamison Sellers came up with the idea and implemented it through Artists of Humanity.

From Artists of Humanity comes an innovative design that turns more than 200 plastic shopping, dry-cleaning or newspaper bags into a colorful plastic bar stool, called "ReVision."

Made by inner-city youth in Boston, Massachusetts, the stools received the Social Responsibility Award by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) at the 2011 Architectural Digest Home Design Show in New York City.

photo: best case scenario emergency oil

When your car's oil light comes on while you're out running errands the night before a flight it's a really lucky thing that the nearest place to pull over is actually the parking lot of a drugstore that happens to sell oil. It's even luckier if you have a Scott [1] of your own who happens to be on his way home and can do all the dirty work for you.* While you're waiting for your Scott to arrive it is also very lucky if you happen to have a Car Kit [2] with scissors so you can improvise a funnel out of a water bottle. It's also pretty cool that the kit also contains individual handi-wipes to clean the hands of your Scott after he's done saving the car. And then you can pick up dinner from your neighborhood Italian place before you head home. Seriously though, the car kit has saved the day a number of times since I've had it. It's always so cheerful to realize that you do have that flashlight/tire gauge/sunscreen/safety pin/breath mint/pliers that you need.

* (For the record I definitely can put oil in my own car but he really was only minutes away and what the hell, it likely saved my favorite jeans from a nasty oil stain.)

How-To: Steampunk Balancing Robot from Recycled Materials

CRAFT Summer Camp

steampunk-robot-fin1.jpg
steampunk-robot-fin2.jpg

By Scott Bedford

Amaze your kids by transforming two old toilet rolls and a few other recycled bits and bobs into a cool steampunk-inspired robot. Amaze them even further by balancing your robot on the edge of a ruler, table, shelf, or even your finger. And then triple amaze them by rotating the arms and revealing the steel heart in the body of the robot.

This is a fun summer project that's also an excellent way for your kids to improve their understanding of gravity and mechanics. It's also a very flexible project - while I gavemy robot all the bells and whistles (literally, there's a whistle on its head), you can easily customize your robot to suit the materials you have available.

Make: Live 6/22/11 — Photo and Video (video)

Make: Live episode 11 is all about photography and video. We take you on a behind-the-scenes tour and show how we put together Make: Live.

Matt Griffin from MakerBot shows us how they make timelapse movies of 3D printers doing their thing Catch up on video and notes from the show here.

Subscribe to the MAKE Podcast in iTunes, download Make: Live episode 11 in its entirety (m4v or Vimeo). Also check out the chat room transcript!

Show notes:

Some time lapse tips and tricks from Matt Griffin:
  • You need something that is fixed or moves slowly to "gel" the time lapse
  • Be careful of auto-exposure and auto-focus, as these kill illusion.
  • Sell realism by simulating camera moves -- s-curves and ease in/ease out help give the viewer a cinematic handling feel while direct lines feel kinda mechanical (security cameras)
  • Typically folks add music after the time lapse -- but if you pick music you like, you can make adjustments to the time lapse to connect it to (or work against) the music.
  • Shoot a big enough image to give you room for reframing -- but make sure the resolution for a tighter shot looks good enough for your needs.
  • Many time lapse/stop motion/intervalometer type tools can be hacked to be queued by something other than time. If you are recording something that changes over time, you can create a tool to trigger the shots that are interesting (motion sensing, tracking, sound sensing etc.)
  • Once you are done shooting, it is like you have a strip of film. You can use any number of batch file renaming or image processing tools to change parts or all of your sequence well before encoding it as video.
  • ou can "thin" out your time lapse to have only images doing what you want, and then use a batch file renaming tool to create a new consecutively numbered sequence of images.
Want to show us your project? Upload a video or photos and send a link to live@makezine.com.

Next show:
Make: Live 12: Robots
Wednesday July 13th, 9pm ET/6pm PT

How-To: Knit or Crochet a Dodecahedron

dodecahedron-knit1.jpg

This week's Math Monday over on MAKE had an awesome crafty bent.

If you knit, here's a stuffed, dodecahedral thing--I don't know quite what to call it--a toy, a pillow, a mathematical model? The shape is based on twelve 5-sided units like a dodecahedron. But they bump out, so the form is more like a small stellated dodecahedron. This was designed by Norah Gaughan, who provides instructions in this Berroco pattern.
