There is no scientific evidence supporting HCG as a weight loss strategy. Scientists have actually investigated this “miracle cure for obesity.”
Not only is the diet no more effective than calorie restriction alone, the HCG also doesn’t affect hunger or other more subjective factors of dieting.

Experts in the supplement industry say the products aren't legal and don't work. Because HCG is a peptide hormone, it would be broken down by the stomach and rendered ineffective,Maria asks…When is the best time to start the HCG drops diet?I heard its best to wait until after your period to start the drops so you can get a full 21 days of it in your system. Is this true or can you start the drops anytime?Chloe Adisson answers:All of the drops are bogus based on a sampling by the FTC. If you read the label it will state the product "does not contain any hormone" or contains a "similar amino acid"
A 500 calorie per day diet is considered anorexic. Mix it with a hormone from pregnant women's urine and you get a miracle diet!
All over the counter hcg products were announced as illegal and fraudulent by the FDA on January 24, 2011. Testing concluded that all over the counter oral and injection products on the market have little to no real hcg in them but most a similar synthetic hormone. I was in GNC several weeks ago. They carry three brands of hcg drops and not one of them has any hcg in them. The well trained salesman even admitted it when I mentioned it. They contained "similar hormones" or amino acids.
Sort of like I'm going to sell you this Toyota Prius but it is really a Ford Focus but we're going to put a price tag on it that says it is a Toyota Prius. Excuse me?
Anyone that lost weight especially with the drops did it because they ate fewer calories than they burned. The hcg acted as the placebo to help them lose the weight.
The only approved use for hcg is to increase fertility in both men and women.
Next year will mark 60 years since this fraudulent science was started.
The doctors exploiting this benign hormone with the ability to prescribe injections can't even agree on how it works. Some say it releases stored fat calories into the system. Others say it acts as an appetite suppressant.
Neither explanation justifies the weight loss in the individuals taking the oral drops with NO hcg in them that still lost weight. I am confident the hcg diet has a 95% failure rate just like every other controversial diet plan out there.
By the way, the expensive "clinical injections" are not covered by insurance since it is not FDA approved. What doctor wouldn't want to get an "all cash" practice going?

First thing I would do is change out the soil- when you change the soil put some rocks or marbles or something in the bottom so when you water it, the extra water has somewhere to go, instead of rotting the roots.
Our plant has made about 15 new plants since we have changed the soil about 2 months ago- i don't know where they come from, since they are easily pulled out of the dirt- we move the new ones around to give them more space.
I would also try talking to the plant if it still looks sad- or put a cigarette in there- it might be jonesin for some nicotine or something.

May Birthday Giveaway: Gluten-free Girl and the Chef

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I've got a copy of Gluten-free Girl and the Chef [1] to give away, it was written by Shauna and Danny Ahern who do the site titled, you've perhaps guessed, Gluten-free Girl and the Chef [2]. I talked about Shauna's first book a few years back when I spent the day being gluten-free [3] and discovered gluten is everywhere, including my toothpaste and my hair product. At the time I met Shauna I knew one person who had celiac, and since then I've met many more. It seems like every one of those I've met has gone through a struggle with what they cannot eat anymore and this is where Shauna comes in, she is a generous, happy, glowing soul who focuses instead on all the goodness one can uncover while eating gluten-free and she shares that. This book was written after she married Danny, the chef in the title (and one awesome guy, if I may say so), and the book covers a love story (romantic sigh) and lots of recipes and beautiful inspiring photos.

Welcoming Two New Voices to CRAFT

We've recently added two new contributors to CRAFT, and I thought you might like to meet them:

Andrew Salomone is no stranger to these parts. We've featured his Self-Portrait Ski Mask, Bill Cosby Portrait in Jello Shots, and Nerds portraiture here, among others. Andrew is an artist and teacher based in New York City, and he'll be sharing interesting projects from the intersection of craft, art, and technology. You can also keep up with his personal work at his website.

Haley Pierson-Cox is a craft writer who is, co-incidentally enough, also based in NYC. She'll be sharing crafts across the spectrum here, and she recently had her first CRAFT how-to: Vegan Serving Dish and Utensil Tags. (And there's another fun project from her coming up next week!) Haley also blogs about crafts, cats, domestic bliss, and DIY goodness at The Zen of Making.

It's not well known but one of the best views in Seattle is from the Observation Deck of the Columbia Tower (one of our skyscrapers). To get there you take a bank of elevators up to one floor and transfer over to another bank of elevators and, hold on, what do you find as you're walking past? A Starbucks! A Starbucks with a pretty great view.

Above is one of the first views that greets you from the Observation Deck. I've circled the Space Needle in orange to show you how tiny it seems from the Columbia Tower. See? Cute.



Here is the proof of the Starbucks. It's free to get up to it, by the way.

To get to the observation deck you take the bank of elevators in the North Lobby to the 40th floor, pass by that Starbucks, then take those elevators to the 73rd floor. Follow the signs to the left. It's about $5 per person to get in and then you find yourself looking down at the Space Needle, which is pretty cool. The views are nearly 360 degrees and on a clear day you can see all the surroundings mountains. It's far cheaper than the Space Needle, involves a whole lot less waiting and zero souvenir photographs. (The Space Needle, though, does have glass elevators and a rotating restaurant.) It's one of my favorite places to bring visitors. And not just to show off that yes we really do have Starbucks everywhere.

My RSS feed broke, the engine light in my car is on, I was late to meet a friend at the bakery and when I got there I knocked a vase off of a table in a dramatic fashion, the cap of a Sharpie in my bag came off leaving some ugly black spots and when I got home I discovered I have a run in my Spanx. It's only 1:30 in the afternoon. I sincerely hope your day is going better than mine.

update: I also forgot to put a title on this post, which I've just fixed. Hey, if you are looking at this in a feed reader and cannot see the moody photo of the offending Sharpie let me know and I'll try to figure out why RSS might still be broken. My thanks!

Today I'm thrilled to have a copy of Tara Austen Weaver's [2] book The Butcher and the Vegetarian [3] to give away. I read this book when it first came out and I'm running late as I type this so I hope you don't mind if I quote myself [4]:


Tara takes us through the time in her life when she, raised a vegetarian, is advised to take up eating meat to help solve some chronic health troubles. The stories of her trying to figure out how to buy and cook meat are both hilarious and filled with a thoughtful exploration of how to balance the personal and environmental ethics of eating meat. She gets very close to the subject, visiting ranches and farms that are gentle to both the land and the animals, going through some of Michael Pollen?s arguments and spending a day at Meathenge. She finds some very good food and people. Tara doesn?t take any more virtuous than thou stances, and approaches each question looking fairly at all sides. That makes it sound boring, I admit, but I assure you it?s not, the book takes a journey that moves along briskly. I love it when I find an author whose words ring very clear in my head, and Tara is one of those.

Dinosaurs and Fairy Tales Made from Balloons

My journey began with this post on MAKE, about "airigami" artist Larry Moss and his amazing balloon-sculpting skills. He's currently fundraising to build a balloon dinosaur park called Elastic Park, filled with creatures like the one above.

Digging deeper into Larry's website, I found so many interesting balloon projects in his archives, including Balloon Manor, a Halloween house for which he was featured on MARTHA, and this incredibly detailed project, Once Upon a Time. Watch the video to see the fary-tale sculptures in action, plus a time-lapse of the construction process. Who knew balloons could be made to take on all those shapes?

Whenever I bake I end up making last minute trips to the grocery store for one ingredient or the other. This time my dough for the Jar of Stars [1] needed to rest over night and in order to get it made I needed to make a late night trip. While there this packaging for something else entirely caught my (tired) eye.

daily photo thing update: Today I'm finally posting a backlog of photos all at once and renaming them "almost daily photo" because I'm no good at keeping up with stuff and, as it turns out, I'm really not good at keeping up with stuff when I've put a set of artificial rules on myself. So I'll try to post a photo a day but if I'm busy or got nothing I won't. I mean, I don't want to start resenting my own self, right?

Develop Film with Instant Coffee and Vitamin C

Matt Richardson @ MAKE recently explored homebrew film developing with "caffenol" in this how-to video.

Only recently did I find out that you can develop negative film with instant coffee, vitamin C, and washing soda. This homebrew developer has become known as "caffenol" and there are plenty of photographers out there who have used this method in the darkroom. I read up on a few different recipes and tried my hand at developing my own snapshots with caffenol. As you can see from the video, it took a couple tries, but I did eventually get it right. As a matter of fact, I was impressed with the results:

that's was the best one I've seen so far for a bangle holder. For not to have to take them out from the bottom, I've got another idea. If u do all the step, but instead of using a bowl, u can use a box (e.g. a shoe box, also decorate it) and make holes on both sides to lie the tubes horizontally (of course the box need to be slightly narrower than the length of the tubes) so you can lift them every time you need to take the bangles out I hope my tip helps! Welcome to Day #2 of my website's birthday month of giveaways! There is a bit more information here [2].

I'm very pleased to have a One Day pass to the School House Craft [3] conference happening here in Seattle Sept. 23rd to the 25th to give to a lucky somebody. School House Craft grew from the Conference for Creative Entrepreneurs that happened here last summer, and which was amazing and packed full of hard learned helpful information from small business owners. It's happening in the Phinney Neighborhood Center here, a charming community space in an old school which happens to be a favorite spot for a lot of the locals. More about the conference:
